What is Yerba Mate?
Yerba mate comes from the leaves of the South American holly tree (Ilex paraguariensis).
Because yerba mate shares many of the constituents that are found in green tea (antioxidants), it is sometimes called South America's version of green tea.
A more accurate description for yerba mate would be a "caffeinated herbal tea" .
Boosts energy and mental alertness
Yerba mate containes xanthines which is a natural source of energy. Xanthines (caffeine, theobromine) are compounds that stimulate the central nervous system (CNS) which results in increased alertness and concentration. Xanthines also help to improve blood flow to muscles, making it ideal for people who do sports or demanding physical activities.
Powerful Antioxidant
Mate is a healthy drink that contains polyphenols, which act as antioxidants. The infusion of yerba mate has revealed itself as a more powerful antioxidant than ascorbic acid (vitamin C), with properties similar to those of red wine in its role of strong antioxidant and inhibitor of the oxidation of low density lipoproteins.
* Antioxidants help reduce cell ageing: These compounds increase the body’s natural defenses as they help prevent the daily cell attacks that cause its deterioration.
* They help prevent the growth of cancer cells: as they fight cell ageing, antioxidants also help prevent certain types of cancer.
* They help diminish the risk of cardiovascular diseases: antioxidants help prevent coronary and cerebro-vascular disease by preventing arteriosclerosis.
Less caffeine than tea or coffee
Yerba mate contains less caffeine than coffee or green tea, and for that reason may be a great alternative for people who would like to reduce levels of caffeine or who may be caffeine intolerant.
Source of Vitamins
It has B-complex vitamins, which help the body take advantage of the energy contained in foods. These vitamins improve muscular function and help maintain a healthy body, skin and hair.
